A tragic incident unfolded at a Texas high school track meet on April 2, 2025, leading to the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The event took place at Kuykendall Stadium, located within Frisco High School, during a district championship competition. The alleged perpetrator, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School, has been apprehended and charged with murder. According to law enforcement officials, Karmelo confessed to the stabbing, asserting that he acted in self-defense after a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis has stated that, in accordance with a 2005 Supreme Court decision (Roper v. Simmons), Karmelo cannot receive a death sentence or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, given his age at the time of the offense. If found guilty, he could face a prison term ranging from 5 to 99 years.
